Parents

Notes for the 2010-11 Year

September 22, 2010

Parents and Swimmers,
We were very impressed and proud of all swimmers and parents throughout this season.  This team is definitely taking the right steps toward creating good attitudes and exceptional performances. Here are the five basic levels of development that we want to work with the parents and swimmers for this next short-course season: Training, Competitive Performance, Stroke Biomechanics, Physiology, Character Development and Life skills, and Psychological Skills.  You will notice in this list only a portion of their growth, as an individual, will come from actual lap time and we will rely on cognitive physiological progression, championship behavior, accountability, self-discipline, time management, commitment, team loyalty, visualization, concentration, self-image, and practice behavior to complete the training cycle we would want in a Sandshark Swimmer.

A wise old-man (Taylor) once told me that “swimming is 90% mental” and I cannot help but find new examples of this everyday.  We are willing to share the responsibility with all the parents to do what is necessary to nurture our young impressionable athletes and expand on this 90% mental potential. All we ask is that you trust our judgment and have confidence in our skills as a swim coaches.  It is insulting to a coach to teach/coach your child during swim team practice.  We work very hard on our knowledge and ability to be able to perform at the top level across the country despite our small size.

Please talk to your coach before or after practice if you have any questions or concerns.  Sit on the side of the pool, as not to give any distractions to your child during practice.  As a coach, we will give them constructive criticism and, as parents, you should be prepared to be there for love and support no matter how your child performs.  They need this comfort zone that enhances the relationship with the coaches and the parents, or they can become overwhelmed trying to please everyone and while still worrying about doing their best.

Keep up the positive attitudes and almost anything is possible.

Drop-off

All age group swimmers must be dropped off no more than 10 min. before the beginning of practice and must go directly to the pool as soon as they are dressed for swimming. Senior must wait in pool area until practice begins.
Under no circumstances may any swimmer wander the campus before practice.

Pick-up

Swimmers will have 10 min. from the end of practice to be dressed after dressing will go directly to the pool and wait in pool until parent pick them up.

Practice/Pool Notes::

  • Parents please do not enter the pool by the double doors at the end of the pool.  This tracks in dirt, which ends up in the pool
  • NO EATING ON DECK it brings bugs
  • Swimmers that repeatedly take too long in the locker room will lose locker room privileges for 1 week.
  • Parents - please, please be on time so coaches & swimmers are not waiting.
  • All swimmers’ book bags or any other items are to be brought into the pool area and not left in the hallway.
  • If a parent is going to be late because of an emergency, please call the office and leave a message - (910) 692-5777 or find your coaches emergency number on the website.

Please read these rules and talk them over with your swimmer, make sure they understand that if we do not comply, the team may lose pool time or usage of the pool altogether. It is very important that everyone follow these rules.

An important message from Julie Wohlrab

Hello Sandsharks and Parents...

After our last meet in Highpoint, Kurt and I thought that we should send out a note to help everyone with meets. Kurt has been swimming since he was 4 (his older sister Meg started at 7 and little sister Lauren at 4) and has been in the sport ever since. I was not a swimmer.... just a swim Mom and have learned after moving all over our country what I need to have to survive a swim meet.... or as it is here in North Carolina.... swim weekend!

Swimmer

  • cap (extras because they rip)
  • goggles (extras because they break)
  • towel
  • suit (and an extra.... just in case!)
  • gatorade
  • powerbars (or pop tarts.... which ever works)
  • ipod (or game boy if you are younger)
  • sweatshirt
  • tennis shoes (Coop likes us to always have tennis shoes on while we aren't swimming, not flip flops)
  • folding chair
  • cash (for food, suits, and stuff)

Parent

  • directions to the pool (Coop posts all info on the meets page of website)
  • list of child's events (also posted)
  • drinks and snacks
  • water
  • extra cap and goggles
  • sharpie and highlighter (sharpie for writing kids events on their arm and a highlighter for the heat sheet)
  • reading material (meets generally last 4 hours... and your kids swim maybe 3 minutes total)
  • chair (always bring chairs.... you may not need them every time but will be thankful when you do!)
  • band aids and tylenol (you never know!)
  • at the meet.... purchase a heat sheet... lists events in order for the meet

Coming to meets prepared is so important for your child's success. It will help them out, help the coaches out and mostly, help you out! Please know that every child is assigned a super psycher. That child is there for support of your child and to answer any questions. Please make sure you find out who your child's super psycher is... it also is posted on the web site. If you have any other questions about meets, super psychers, or swim team in general.... I would be glad to help you, and if I don't know the answer,I will find someone who does! Swimming is a wonderful sport, and the team is so important! I look forward to meeting lots of you in South Carolina this weekend!

Drop Off, Pick Up & Parking

Please use the “enter” driveway when arriving and the “exit” when leaving the parking lot. Do not park your car in the circular portion of the driveway. This area is for quick drop offs and pick ups. Children and parents should enter the pool through the white tile area. Please do not enter or exit from the exterior double doors on the pool deck. All swim bags should be brought into the pool area when swimming. Non – O’Neal students may be in the locker rooms, white tile area or the pool. No sitting or climbing on the fencing in the parking area. Parents need to be on time when picking up their swimmers after practice.

Communication

The calendar (white dry-erase board) inside the pool shows all up-coming swim meets, holidays, team breaks and special events. The bulletin board outside the pool doors is used for swim meet sign ups and special event postings. A mailbox (folder) is established for each swim family after joining Sandsharks. This is located inside the pool doors in the blue file boxes. The mailbox should be checked daily. The web site www.sandshark.org should be read thoroughly for any changes or upcoming events. Please let your child’s coach know when your child will miss practice. If you need to speak with the coach, please do so before or after practice. You may also phone the Sandshark office at (910) 692-5777.

Payments

All payments should be paid by check and inserted in the wooden payment box inside the pool.

Swim Gear

All swimmers should have a well fitting swim suit/jammer, swim cap and a couple pair of goggles. Our team vendor, Kastaway, comes to the pool at scheduled times throughtout the year for suit fittings and will also have practice suits, goggles, caps and other goodies for purchase. The dates are announced beforehand. Hibbett’s in Pinecrest Plaza has a small selection of caps, goggles and suits.

Parents do not need to stay at the pool during practice. If staying, parents should sit on the blue benches along the side of the pool.
